Dia de los Muertos - A Celebration of Life

La Calavera Catrina ('The Elegant Skull') is a 1913 zinc etching by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada. The image has since become a staple of Mexican imagery, and often is incorporated into artistic manifestations of the Day of the Dead in November, such as altars and calavera costumes. The etching was part of his series of calaveras, which were humorous images of contemporary figures depicted as skeletons, which often were accompanied by a poem.

The word catrina is the feminine form of the word catrín, which means "elegant". The figure, depicted in an ornate hat fashionable at the time, is intended to show that the rich and fashionable, despite their pretensions to importance, are just as susceptible to death as anyone else.

Sketchbook Project 2011

Ya just gotta git the stuff outta your head and onta the paper, dang it!  Ok, I finally met a goal today and did a rough draft.  There are drawings on the back of these too.  Only took about an hour, or less and these intial ideas will only take up a small portion of the 39 single pages (78 double sided) of my book.  Holy toledo Batman, what's a girl going to do?  Longer connecting pipes perhaps, with all kinds of gizmo gazmos and whilly whirlies.  That ought to do it.

Mary's Sun

I went through a difficult patch this year and came out looking at life in a different way.  During those days amongst the thorny thickets, a women with an infectious smile never spoke.  When Mary's insides came out I took a deep breath, held it, and began to cry.  Others thought to make her smile a joke perhaps about the gray cloud above her head, but I knew, inside her smile was a cry for help.  Mary inspired me to create this gift for her.  Behind every gray cloud is a bright sun pushing forward to light the way.

Sketchbook Project 2011

No work on the book last night, or tonight.  Miss Allie aka Kinkachoo, aka Sweetie Pie, aka Baby is suffering from some sort of malady involving her ability to eat chow.  I'm keeping a close eye on her and called the vet.  Doc thinks it might be her teeth.  Little does Allie know, but a trip to her favorite person will happen Monday morning.

Sketchbook Project 2011

Yes Roger, this is Blogger :)

I'm tired tonight and lack energy, and motivation to work on my book.  It has nothing to do with hooking up with freinds at the Fu after work, really.

Instead, I checked Facebook, caught up on email, worked on a couple pictures, and of course .... this blog.

Sketchbook Project 2011

I finally figured out how to link my Flickr with Blogger.  Now I can slide show my photos .... yippee!

On another note, sometimes things just happen for a reason.

While at lunch, I read a magazine in the break room.  I've been formulating this idea for my book.  My theme, "Science Projects Gone Wrong."  I was so thrilled to find an article supporting my idea.

Sketchbook Project 2011

I cleaned the studio in eager anticipation of 'the' book. Yes, the book of all books. The Sketchbook Project 2011 book. The table is ready, the setting is perfect. Now all I have to do is wait for the post office to deliver my package.
